BD and JDRF to develop insulin infusion system for extended wear

11th November 2016

BD has announced a new research collaboration with JDRF, the leading global organisation funding type 1 diabetes research.

Under the terms of this new two-year funding commitment, BD will work to develop technology enhancements to support the creation of a new type of insulin infusion set designed for extended wear.

Specifically, the work will examine the biological causes of limited set life, with subsequent concept prototyping and testing to address these causes. Current insulin infusion sets are presently only suitable for up to three days of use.

By addressing mechanical-material and biological issues that contribute to limited set lifespans, the organisations hope it will be possible to design new devices that work beyond three days for a majority of patients.

Ken Miller, president of diabetes care for BD, said: "We can continue to build on the successful innovations BD currently offers in the insulin infusion category. We are extremely excited for this opportunity to advance the science and understanding of insulin delivery."

This collaboration builds on the existing work JDRF and BD have done together to enhance the therapy options available for people with type 1 diabetes.
