BD and WeRobotics study benefits of drone delivery in Peruvian Amazon

22nd November 2017

BD has highlighted the success of a recent study that assessed the benefits of using drone technology to improve access to medical supplies in the Peruvian Amazon.

The two-week study tested unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to transport supplies and patient samples to areas with poor transportation infrastructure, which is a common issue in countries such as Peru.

Multiple UAV platforms were tested for range, payload capacity and sensitivity to environmental factors such as weather and geography, with more than 40 autonomous flights carried out over distances up to 126 km.

Across all platforms, UAV flights were shown to be significantly faster and less expensive when compared to traditional transportation methods such as boat or mototaxi.

Weak transportation infrastructure can result in delays in the transportation of blood samples, causing sample degradation and making samples invalid for testing, while many patients have difficulty accessing testing locations. UAV technology could offer solutions to both problems.

Noel Harvey, senior vice-president for BD Technologies and Innovation, said: "The UAV study in Peru is a great example of how BD is working to advance the world of health by ensuring access to life-saving medical diagnostics and supplies."
