BD developing new herpes testing solution

4th January 2011

BD has announced that it is developing new amplified molecular tests that will make it easier to diagnose and treat cases of herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections.

The company has applied for US regulatory approval of its new BD ProbeTec HSV-1 and HSV-2 Qx Amplified DNA Assays, which are capable of detecting and differentiating HSV-1 and HSV-2 DNA in external anogenital lesion specimens.

These fully-automated tests are the first of their kind and utilise Strand Displacement Amplification technology to provide improved diagnostic accuracy and speed compared to traditional culture methods.

BD states that the tests represent an important advance over current technology, which often cannot differentiate between HSV-1 and HSV-2 and is associated with high false negative rates.

Wayne Brinster, vice-president and general manager for women's health and cancer at BD Diagnostics, said: "When caring for a patient who may be suffering from HSV, clinicians need a precise picture of what they are dealing with."

In September 2010, the company published its financial report for the 2009-10 fiscal year, highlighting a 5.5 percent year-on-year growth in revenue.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-800321704-ADNFCR
