BD launches new Kiestra urine culture app
BD has announced the launch of a new microbiology urine testing app that can automatically report and release negative urine cultures.
The Kiestra urine culture app is designed for use in conjunction with BD's BBL plated media, and utilises digital imaging and software algorithms to determine the amount of growth on a urine culture plate from clean-caught and catheterised samples.
Using the Kiestra ReadA compact's intelligent incubation and imaging capabilities, time series imaging can be carried out efficiently, meaning plates with no significant growth can be automatically released for disposal, while those with significant growth go into a queue for clinician analysis.
It is estimated that 70 percent of urine samples yield no significant growth, so the ability to filter these out automatically will greatly improve lab efficiency. Moreover, the definition of significant growth can be customised using patient demographics and lab-directed rules.
Steve Conly, vice-president of microbiology for BD, said: "As one of the first applications using image analysis software, the urine culture app begins the transformation of microbiology practices today."
