BD study shows antimicrobial removal system benefits

1st March 2013

BD has reported new data from an independent study showing the benefits of antimicrobial removal systems in the accurate and rapid diagnosis of sepsis.

Data from the study published in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases demonstrated that treatment with broad-spectrum antibiotics can undermine the detection bacteria in blood samples from potentially septic patients.

As such, antimicrobial removal systems in contemporary blood culture media – including BD's Bactec Plus Aerobic medium – can help to rapidly and accurately recover the organisms causing infection, thus aiding the process of making treatment decisions.

This trial was the first clinical head-to-head blood culture comparison study to be carried out in 15 years.

Dr Tobi Karchmer, worldwide vice-president for medical affairs at the diagnostic systems division of BD Diagnostics, said: "This new study provides evidence that hospitals using sensitive and rapid blood culture media can make a difference in helping physicians."

Last month, the company published its financial results for the first quarter of 2013, during which it achieved year-on-year growth of 3.7 percent.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-801549619-ADNFCR
