BD to assist in African healthcare initiative

23rd June 2010

BD has announced that it will be playing a part in a charitable initiative designed to improve the standard of blood sampling and handling in African healthcare facilities.

The medical technology company is allying with the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief programme to help train Kenyan health workers in safe blood drawing practices, allowing them to lead education schemes of their own in future.

As part of the project, BD will also be funding the construction of two new incinerator sites in the African nation for disposal of medical waste.

These moves represent the first parts of a three-year initiative which is aimed at eliminating HIV transmission in African healthcare settings, with the scheme potentially set to be extended for a further two years should BD choose to do so.

Gary Cohen, executive vice-president of BD, said its work will “improve occupational safety in Kenyan health facilities and strengthen the country’s overall health system”.

Last week, BD announced that it is to dedicate an expanded amount of money and resources to its research grant programme, which is designed to provide support for stem cell research.
