BDA blames government for recent rise in child tooth extractions
The British Dental Association (BDA) has pointed the finger at the government for the recent rise in the number of children undergoing tooth extraction operations.
Recent figures from the Local Government Association have revealed that 160 children and teenagers are undergoing tooth extractions under general anaesthesia in hospitals in England every day, despite tooth decay being an entirely preventable condition.
According to the BDA, the government's unwillingness to tackle tooth decay has a big part to play in this, calling for the new sugar levy to mark the start of a renewed commitment to oral health in England.
Last year, it was estimated that more than 600,000 patients annually are seeing their GPs looking for dental treatment that doctors are not equipped to provide. The BDA says this is one of the reasons why these problems are arising.
BDA chair Mick Armstrong said: "Authorities in Scotland and Wales have set out dedicated strategies that are making real headway in the fight against a preventable disease. Ministers in England cannot remain bystanders."
