BDA calls for action against lawyers targeting dentists
The British Dental Association (BDA) has raised concerns about the increasing number of dentists being targeted by lawsuits.
New figures from Dental Protection have shown that dentists are now twice as likely to be sued than a decade ago, due to the rise in no-win-no-fee lawyers contributing to a more litigious culture.
The report showed that 90 percent of dentists are increasingly fearful of being sued, with
80 percent saying the fear of being sued has impacted on their confidence, and 68 percent saying this worry has made them consider their future in the profession.
This is despite Care Quality Commission reports demonstrating that dental patients are at lower risk than those seen by any other UK health provider, with the trend putting health services under additional strain.
BDA chair Mick Armstrong said: "Dentists are already feeling the squeeze on declining pay and skyrocketing expenses. Our patients do not expect to see funds desperately needed for investment lining the pockets of voracious no-win no-fee lawyers."
