BDA criticises pay freeze for foundation dentist trainers
The British Dental Association (BDA) has criticised the government for the continued pay freeze affecting foundation dentists' educational supervisors.
It has been confirmed that the recent freeze on service costs for training staff is set to continue, despite evidence that the sector is facing recruitment problems at the moment.
Although the government has introduced pay increases of 1.14 percent including expenses for general dental practitioners and one percent for foundation dentists, the BDA has described these uplifts as "derisory", saying they will jeopardise the long-term sustainability of NHS general dental practice.
Given that foundation training is a key part of ensuring the quality of NHS dentistry, the freeze on service cost payments covering nursing needs, surgery labs and materials is viewed by the BDA as "an act of unnecessary self-harm".
Henrik Overgaard-Nielsen, the BDA's chair of general dental practice, said: "The sustainability of the dental workforce depends on these trainers, and government risks shutting down the pipeline in its search for savings."
