BDA expresses concern over proposed cuts to specialist training

6th July 2017

The British Dental Association (BDA) has expressed concerns about cost-cutting measures by Health Education England (HEE) that could potentially reduce access to specialist training.

Allying with the British Medical Association (BMA), the BDA has responded to a consultation on proposed HEE cutbacks to education services by warning that this could hamper the ability to safely and effectively deliver postgraduate medical and dental education.

Specifically, the unions suggested that the subsequent loss in capacity and expertise to deliver specialist training and other educational activities could far outweigh any savings made, while questioning whether the proposed cuts have taken sufficient account of existing staff shortages.

Additionally, the BDA and BMA queried whether all the dentists and doctors affected by HEE's proposed changes have been consulted, while calling for a clear commitment that employees will be treated fairly and consistently in any future voluntary redundancy scheme.

Alison Lockyer, chair of the BDA's education, ethics and the dental team working group, said: "While HEE may be caught between a rock and hard place in terms of government-imposed cuts to their budget, doctors and dentists are united in their concerns over proposals that could seriously undermine the training of our much-needed specialists."
