BDA report highlights potential dental recruitment crisis
The British Dental Association (BDA) has released new data suggesting a widespread recruitment crisis is affecting NHS dentistry at present.
A survey carried out by the professional body has indicated that 68 percent of NHS practices in England that attempted to recruit in the last year struggled to fill vacancies, while 50 percent reported similar issues the previous year.
Low morale and motivation have been cited as drivers of this problem, with staff with the highest levels of NHS work said to be more than twice as likely to report job dissatisfaction than those with lighter commitments.
The BDA has previously reported that as many as 58 percent of NHS dentists say they are now planning to leave the service in the next five years, suggesting the sector is in need of immediate reform.
BDA vice-chair Eddie Crouch said: "Failure to act is already leaving millions of patients across the country in limbo. We look to ministers to take responsibility and show dedicated health professionals that NHS care is not an unattractive option."
