Bexsero set for NHS use

21st March 2014

The Bexsero treatment has been licenced for use in Europe since January 2013 last year but there was a delay getting approval for NHS use while its effectiveness was dicussed.

Meningitis B is most common in children under five and particularly in infants less than 12 months old. The fatal disease infects the protective membranes surrounding the central nervous system and can lead to severe brain damage, septicaemia and death.

Every year in the UK there are around 1,870 cases of meningitis B. One in ten cases will result in a fatality, while a third of sufferers will be left with debilitating after-effects such as loss of limbs or brain damage.

The Meningitis Now charity has campaigned for the vaccine to be available on the NHS. Around 200 scientists and medical researchers backed a petition last month.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-801705514-ADNFCR
