Biogen appoints new chief operating officer

1st April 2009

Biogen’s new chief operating officer Robert A Hamm was an “excellent” choice, it has been asserted.

Currently he is serving as executive vice-president of the pharmaceutical operations and technology division in the company – a role he has been in since 2007 – and now will take over Hans Peter Hasler’s position.

Jim Mullen, chief executive officer of the business, remarked Mr Hamm has a wide range of experience in nearly all aspects of the firm’s operations.

“His strong commercial understanding and outstanding leadership qualities make him an excellent choice to be our COO,” he commented.

Since joining Biogen in 1994, Mr Hamm has held a number of positions including senior vice-president of Europe, Canada and Middle East, as well as director of northern Europe and distributors markets.

Last month, the company’s president of research and development Cecil B Pickett announced his retirement from the business.

He was recruited to transform Biogen’s pipeline and Mr Mullen asserted the firm’s portfolio is now one of the strongest in the industry.

After stepping down from his executive position, Mr Pickett will continue to serve on the board of directors.
