Biogen Idec appoints new technology and business solutions head

Biogen Idec has announced the appointment of Adriana Karaboutis as executive vice-president for technology and business solutions, effective as of September 24th 2014.

Ms Karaboutis joins the company from Dell, where she served as vice-president and chief information officer. In her new role at Biogen Idec, she will lead IT operations and advance the company's use of technology and data to enhance engagement with patients and healthcare providers.

This will help Biogen Idec leverage advanced analytics to inform the drug discovery process, allowing them to unlock new insights from clinical data and improve patient care through tools such as wearable and ingestible devices.

Ms Karaboutis can also boast past experience of working in leadership roles at companies such as Ford and General Motors.

Dr George Scangos, chief executive officer of Biogen Idec, said: "As the pace of digital innovation accelerates, Andi will play a critical role in our mission to improve human health and support those who serve patients."

This follows the appointment of Dr Richard Rudick to the newly-created role of vice-president for development sciences and value-based medicine earlier this year.
