Biogen Idec names new chef executive officer
Biogen Idec has announced that former Exelixis head Dr George Scangos is to become the company’s new chief executive officer.
Dr Scangos, who has also previously served as president of biotechnology for Bayer, will take up his post on July 15th 2010 and will also become a member of Biogen Idec’s board of directors.
He brings nearly 25 years of experience from the pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors to Biogen Idec and has been unanimously described as an “ideal fit” for the company by its board.
Dr Scangos said that key priorities for the firm under his leadership will include improving the performance of drugs such as Avonex and Tysabri, while he also plans to hire a new head of research and development.
He added: “I look forward to building on the company’s many strengths and working with the board and employees to improve the lives of patients and drive value for shareholders.”
Dr Scangos’ appointment comes after Biogen Idec’s former president, chief executive officer and director retired from the company last month.
