Biogen names new worldwide medical head

Biogen has announced the appointment of Dr Sanjay Jariwala as senior vice-president of its worldwide medical business.

Dr Jariwala joins Biogen from AstraZeneca, where he held the roles of head of strategy and vice-president of infection, neuroscience, autoimmunity and antithrombotics within the firm's global medical affairs unit.

During his time at AstraZeneca, he led the transformation of the company's worldwide medical affairs council, while developing a new strategic medical planning process and revamping its medical operating model.

Other previous employers include Vifor Pharma, Aspreva Pharmaceuticals and GlaxoSmithKline, with the executive having also spent time working as a practising NHS physician.

In his new role at Biogen, Dr Jariwala will be responsible for leading and driving its worldwide medical strategy, working closely with the firm's global therapeutic operations and research leadership teams.

Biogen's chief medical officer Alfred Sandrock said: "Sanjay's depth of experience and track record of strategic integration of global therapeutic operations, clinical development, commercial, and state-of-the-art medical leadership across large organisations is impressive."
