Biogen names next chief executive officer
Biogen has announced the appointment of Michel Vounatsos as its new chief executive officer (CEO) and member of the board of directors, effective as of January 6th 2017.
Mr Vounatsos joined the company in April after a 20-year career at Merck Sharp and Dohme, and has served in the role of executive vice-president and chief commercial officer at Biogen to great effect.
He has been credited with implementing key initiatives to extend the company's leadership in multiple sclerosis, expanding its reach in key global markets and preparing for the introduction of breakthrough treatments in areas of high unmet need.
This follows on from a previous announcement that Dr George Scangos, Biogen's current CEO, would step down from the position once a successor could be found. He has led the company since 2010.
Dr Stelios Papadopoulos, chairman of Biogen's board of directors, said: "It was clear to us through a rigorous search process that Michel is that leader who can guide Biogen in the next phase of its evolution."
