Biotronik launches MRI-compatible pacing system

16th June 2010

Biotronik has announced the European launch of its ProMRI Pacing System, which allow pacemaker patients to undergo MRI scanning.

The medical device series, which is composed of the Evia pacemaker and Safio pacing leads, represents the first time a pacemaker portfolio has been designed to be compatible with MRI scan technology.

Preciously, pacemaker patients have been unable to undergo the scans due to the risk of the MRI machine interfering with the pacing system.

In addition to this headline feature, the new ProMRI range offers additional benefits such as an advanced physiological rate regulation algorithm, thin leads and compatibility with the Biotronik Home Monitoring System.

Marlou Janssen, vice-president of global marketing and sales for cardiac rhythm management at Biotronik, said: “We are very pleased to make this technology available to tens of thousands of European patients who now can confidently undergo MRI.”

Last month, Biotronik donated a number of cardiac devices to the charity organisation Heartbeat International Foundation, for distribution in underprivileged areas such as India and Honduras.
