BMA calls for doctors’ pay to rise in line with broader economy

19th February 2018

The British Medical Association (BMA) has called for the government to increase pay rates for NHS doctors to better reflect current economic trends.

In its submission to the Doctors and Dentists Review Body, the BMA has called for the pay of all UK doctors to be increased in line with the Retail Price Index, plus an additional GBP 800 or two percent, whichever is greater.

Since 2008, doctors have experienced the largest drop in earnings of all professions subject to pay body review, with a 19 percent fall in pay for consultants, while junior doctors have seen a 21 percent cut and GP pay has dropped by 20 percent.

The BMA has responded to these figures by calling for this long-term gap in earnings to be addressed as soon as possible to stave off issues such as poor morale and recruitment and retention problems.

BMA council chair Chaand Nagpaul said: "While the BMA understands the economic constraints facing the health service, years of real-terms cuts to frontline staff pay undermines the excellent work from hardworking doctors and leaves them feeling demoralised and undervalued."
