BMA calls for more support for female NHS doctors

16th February 2018

The British Medical Association (BMA) has underlined the need for female doctors working in the NHS to receive more support to increase their earning potential.

Dr Anthea Mowat of the BMA said provisions such as leadership training, mentoring and flexible working should be made more readily available to women, after research by the BBC showed that senior NHS female doctors earn less than their male counterparts.

The findings indicated that full-time female consultants earn nearly GBP 14,000 a year less on average than men, a pay gap of 12 percent.

A third of NHS consultants are women, but only five of the top 100 earners in this profession are female, according to the BBC investigation.

Dr Mowat said that, despite recent progress, it is clear there is "still a long way to go" to address the gender pay gap among NHS doctors.

"With women making up the majority of medical graduates in recent years, it's vitally important that we address the root causes of the gender pay gap, and develop a wider programme of work to eliminate it across the medical workforce," she added.
