BMA calls for political action as NHS nears ‘breaking point’

26th May 2017

The British Medical Association (BMA) has called on the next government to take urgent action to address the escalating resourcing crisis within the NHS.

According to the organisation, the health service is currently at "breaking point" after experiencing one of the worst winters in its history, despite mild weather and a lack of widespread outbreaks of flu or norovirus.

During the first three months of the year, bed occupancy rates on general and acute wards in England hit 91.4 percent – the worst figure on record – while the end of 2016 saw 89.7 percent of beds for mental health patients filled, another historic high.

The BMA's findings also indicated that 94 of 152 NHS foundation trusts issued major alerts on at least one day between December 2016 and mid-March 2017 to say they could not cope, with bed occupancy, care transfer delays and emergency wait times all on the rise.

BMA council chairman Dr Mark Porter blamed years of chronic underfunding and rising patient demand for the current problems.

He said: "Pressures previously only seen during the winter months are now becoming the norm year-round, as current trends suggest that performance will continue to deteriorate rather than improve."
