BMA confirms five days of industrial action for September
The British Medical Association (BMA) has announced that junior doctors will be staging another five days of strike action later this month.
A full withdrawal of labour will be taking place from between the hours of 08:00 and 17:00 on September 12th to 16th, with dates for further planned industrial action to be confirmed later on.
This is the latest step in the ongoing dispute between the BMA and the government over controversial planned changes to the junior doctors' contract, which have been widely rejected by the industry.
Concerns have been raised about the impact that the contract will have on those working less than full time and on junior doctors who frequently work weekends, typically in specialties where there is already a shortage of doctors.
A compromise contract was worked out earlier this year, but doctors voted to reject it, leading the government to reiterate its threat of imposing the contract without approval from the BMA.
Dr Ellen McCourt, junior doctors committee chair at the BMA, said: "We have a simple ask of the government: stop the imposition. If it agrees to do this, junior doctors will call off industrial action."
