BMA raises concerns about hospital and social care budget cuts
The British Medical Association (BMA) has raised concerns about the considerable budget cuts NHS hospitals and social care services are being forced to make at present.
BMA News analysis of 44 English NHS plans, released late last year, has indicated that hospitals and social care providers will have to slash at least 26 billion pounds from their budgets to avoid falling foul of public funding constraints set by the government.
Further data from the sustainability and transformation plans indicated that the figure for local authorities is likely to be much higher, as almost one-third of the plans did not factor in shortfalls in social care funding.
Hospitals in areas with significant social care deficits include those facing the biggest struggles to provide social care for patients, which the BMA points to as evidence that the government's budget constraints are having a negative impact on care quality.
Mark Porter, the BMA's council chair, said: "Social care has been cut to the bone, but unlike health it is not a protected budget. Politicians from all sides need to come together to agree a long-term solution to this growing problem."
