BMA survey shows overseas doctors feel they are treated differently
The British Medical Association (BMA) has raised concerns over the findings of a new survey that highlights the discrimination that many overseas doctors working in the NHS are facing.
Speaking to more than 3,000 doctors, it was shown that 49 percent of doctors who qualified outside the EU feel patients treat international doctors differently to UK medical graduates, compared to 38 percent of their EU-qualified counterparts.
Moreover, 41 percent of non-EU doctors reported encountering patients who did not wish to be treated by an overseas member of staff, compared to 25 per cent of EU doctors having similar experiences.
Although many of these incidents were in the past, worries have been expressed that the Brexit vote has inflamed many of these underlying tensions.
BMA council chair Mark Porter responded to the findings by calling on health employers to ensure international doctors facing any discrimination of this kind are provided with all the support they need.
He said: "Employers have a duty to provide their full support to overseas doctors faced with verbal or physical abuse, and ensure that appropriate action is taken to tackle discrimination in our clinics and wards."
