BMA survey shows worsening NHS staffing and financial pressures

24th January 2018

The British Medical Association (BMA) has published the findings of a new professional survey showing that staffing and financial pressures are mounting within the NHS.

The latest quarterly survey of 900 doctors from across all branches of practice has revealed that 71 percent of hospital doctors have experienced rota gaps in their departments, while 65 percent reported unfilled posts.

Among GPs, 47 percent reported GP vacancies, while 67 percent of doctors say urgent and emergency care services have deteriorated slightly or significantly worsened over the past year.

It was also revealed that 86 percent of doctors felt the financial sustainability of the health service has worsened over the past year, while 41 percent of doctors said their morale was low or very low, with GPs shown to be worst affected.

BMA council chair Chaand Nagpaul said: "We urgently need a long-term solution to the staffing and funding pressures facing the NHS, otherwise it simply won't be able to provide the safe and high-quality care that patients deserve and doctors want to be able to deliver."
