BMI Healthcare hospital launches implant treatment for foot drop

11th April 2012

BMI Healthcare has introduced a pioneering new implant treatment for foot drop at its Blackheath Hospital facility in Greater London.

The new ActiGait implant is around the size of a matchbox and is able to counteract the effects of the debilitating nerve disorder, which weakens the muscles used to flex the ankle and toes, causing sufferers to drag the front of the affected foot when walking.

A recent report in the Mail on Sunday showcased the benefits of the treatment, which is offered by consultant surgeon Dr Michael Jauch and provides long-term efficacy, reduces tiredness and helps users to move around more safely.

"This treatment means patients are able to walk so much better. They regain their confidence because they don't have to concentrate on every step," explained Dr Jauch.

Currently, the treatment is available to stroke sufferers only, but it is thought it could also offer benefits for multiple sclerosis and spinal injury patients.

The Blackheath Hospital is a 68-bed acute general hospital situated across two sites in Blackheath, offering diagnostic, surgical and rehabilitative care for a range of conditions.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-801337003-ADNFCR
