Boehringer Ingelheim and Sarah Cannon Research Institute announce cancer alliance
Boehringer Ingelheim has announced a new cancer-focused research partnership with the Sarah Cannon Research Institute.
Focusing on the area of immuno-oncology, the collaboration will leverage Boehringer Ingelheim's experience in cancer drug development, plus Sarah Cannon's expertise and leadership in designing and optimising clinical trials.
The partners will examine the potential of the investigational monoclonal antibodies BI 754091 and BI 754111 for use in the combination treatment of multiple cancers with high unmet medical needs, including non-small cell lung cancer.
Both are immune checkpoint inhibitors that trigger the patient's own immune system to fight the cancer, but each interacts with the immune system at different points, potentially resulting in a better anti-tumour response and improved outcomes for patients.
Sarah Cannon will provide clinical development services and operational delivery of the early-stage development programmes, allowing rapid patient enrolment for clinical trials across the US and UK. The collaboration could be expanded beyond the initial research focus if the early tests are successful.
Dr Jorg Barth, corporate senior vice-president for Boehringer Ingelheim's oncology division, said: "This collaboration is an important part of our commitment to the area of immune oncology and complements our ongoing research efforts to develop therapeutic cancer vaccines or cancer-fighting viruses, as well as in the development of novel targeted therapies."
