Boehringer Ingelheim staff support World Diabetes Day
Boehringer Ingelheim has detailed the efforts of its staff to support World Diabetes Day, a recent global event designed to raise awareness of diabetes and its associated healthcare needs.
During the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) campaign, which took place on November 14th 2010, Boehringer Ingelheim workers were equipped with pedometers to measure each step they took for a week.
This total was added up and converted into a monetary contribution of 15,000 euros (12,734 pounds) for the IDF's Life for a Child initiative, which helps to provide medical support, monitoring and education for 8,000 children in 27 nations.
Glyn Parkin, corporate vice-president for cardio-metabolic diseases at Boehringer Ingelheim, said: "We share IDF's commitment to diabetes education and raising awareness of a condition that is expected to affect close to half a billion people worldwide by 2030."
World Diabetes Day has been running since 1991 and is organised jointly by the IDF and the World Health Organization.
Other sponsors of the 2010 event included AstraZeneca, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Pfizer, Sanofi-aventis and Merck Sharpe and Dohme.
