Boots pharmacists receive training to detect haemochromatosis symptoms
Boots UK has allied with the Haemochromatosis Society to provide its pharmacists with training on how to detect and diagnose genetic haemochromatosis (GH).
The training package is aimed at increasing knowledge about the causes, symptoms, risks and management of GH, which is also sometimes referred to as iron overload disorder.
This inherited condition occurs when the body absorbs too much iron from food. It is known to be under-diagnosed across the UK, despite being one of the most common genetic disorders in people of Northern European origin.
Philip Tordoff, clinical governance manager at Boots UK, said: "It is fantastic to work with a specialist organisation like the Haemochromatosis Society to create professional training modules that are accessible to our healthcare professionals."
The training package is being made available through Boots' internal systems, with copies also available from the Haemochromatosis Society. This will allow the module to be utilised by non-Boots pharmacists as well.
It comes after Boots recently announced the introduction of a new pharmacy advisor role within its branches, allowing dispensing and healthcare teams to work together more closely and flexibly.
