Boots’ sore throat test and treat service selected for NHS Innovation Accelerator
Boots UK has announced that its Sore Throat Test and Treat Service is to be rolled out nationwide as part of the NHS Innovation Accelerator programme.
The NHS scheme selects evidence-based and cost-saving health interventions that have been shown to help address key challenges facing the health service and supports their expansion across more than 380 NHS organisations.
Launched as a pilot scheme in 2014, Boots' Sore Throat Test and Treat Service encompasses a point-of-care diagnostic test and a comprehensive consultation to help pharmacies determine the cause of sore throats and decide whether antibiotics will be appropriate.
Analysis of the results of the pilot showed that two-thirds of patients who would have seen their GP did not need to do so. If extrapolated to the 1.2 million GP consultations for sore throats each year, then an additional 800,000 patients could be potentially redirected to community pharmacies.
The service also has the potential to reduce antibiotic pressure and the emergence of resistance by ensuring antibiotics are not used inappropriately.
Malcolm Harrison, senior manager for project and contract development and innovation lead at Boots, said the wider rollout of the scheme will help to "make sure that patients have a new access point of care to relieve burden on GPs, while also making sure that antibiotics are only given when needed".
