Boots UK introduces mole scanning service to aid skin cancer detection
Boots UK has announced the launch of a new mole scanning service to help detect potential early signs of skin cancer.
Developed in partnership with ScreenCancer UK, the service aims to help people identify any skin issues that may need further investigation as soon as possible. It uses the SIAscope imaging tool to capture images of five components of the skin across different layers.
Trained Boots healthcare advisors will send these images to ScreenCancer UK for analysis by a dermatology specialist. If the mole or pigmented lesion is identified as a potential risk, the customer will be contacted to discuss the next steps.
Melanoma is the fastest growing form of skin cancer in the UK, with young people thought to be particularly at risk from the disease.
Moreover, awareness of the condition is low and many say they would not recognise signs of melanoma, which is why Boots is specifically targeting young adults with this service.
Richard Bradley, pharmacy director for Boots UK, said: "This is just another fantastic example of how community pharmacists can use their clinical skills to support patients' health in locations and at times that are convenient to them."
