Boots UK launches campaign to drive flu vaccination in pregnant women
Boots UK has announced the launch of a new campaign aimed at increasing the uptake of influenza vaccinations among pregnant women.
The pharmacy chain has partnered with junior doctor and celebrity mother-to-be Emily MacDonagh to raise awareness of the necessity of immunisation, while encouraging pregnant women to visit their local pharmacy to receive their free NHS flu vaccination.
Research indicates that 56 percent of expectant mothers did not receive a flu jab last year, despite the protection it can provide against the preventable complications that can arise from flu for mothers and children alike.
These include bronchitis, pneumonia, ear infections and meningitis, while the disease can also sometimes lead to the baby being born prematurely or at a low birth weight.
The NHS offers free flu vaccinations to pregnant women from September to February each year. More than 2,000 Boots stores across England and Wales are involved in providing the jab, with an in-store consultation and injection taking only 15 minutes.
Boots pharmacist Angela Chalmers said: "If you are expecting a baby and have any concerns, drop into your local Boots store where one of our fully-trained pharmacists will be able to answer your questions, administer your vaccination and offer any additional advice."
