Boston Scientific launches Taxus Element stent in Europe

11th June 2010

Boston Scientific has released its Taxus Element paclitaxel-eluting coronary stent system across the EU region.

The next-generation medical device, which utilises a platinum chromium alloy build and improved design elements, has been granted CE Mark approval and is specified for the treatment of diabetic patients.

It comes after the device demonstrated its safety and efficacy in the recent 12-month Perseus clinical trial, during which its benefits compared to the older Taxus Express 2 were highlighted

The new stent has already been utilised in its first European procedures in Italy and the UK, with Dr Adrian Banning of the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford performing one of the surgeries.

He said: “The diabetic indication for the Taxus Element Stent System provides an important benefit given that approximately one third of all patients presenting with coronary artery disease in Europe have diabetes.”

Last month, Boston Scientific commenced a new clinical study of the everolimus-eluting stent Promus Element, which will involve almost 3,000 patients.
