Boston Scientific launches world’s longest-lasting ICDs

3rd February 2015

Boston Scientific has announced the launch of a new range of implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) that are designed to be the longest-lasting products of their kind in the world.

The Extended Longevity (EL) ICD range includes the Dynagen EL and Inogen EL device models and incorporates EnduraLife battery technology developed using high-performance chemistry and advanced manufacturing capabilities.

Providing up to double the battery capacity of other ICDs, devices with similar technology have been shown to outperform the longevity of rival products in several recent clinical studies. In total, the EL ICD is projected to last nearly 12 years.

The first US implant of the device was carried out at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center by Dr Samir Saba, who said the system can help reduce the need for avoidable replacement procedures.

Joe Fitzgerald, executive vice-president and president of rhythm management at Boston Scientific, said: "Physicians are now able to offer patients a longer-lasting device and increased peace of mind, while administrators and payors have new options to more effectively manage healthcare costs and minimise unexpected complications."

The company is planning to release its financial results for the 2014 business year later this week.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-801773687-ADNFCR
