Boston Scientific targets Chinese expansion
Boston Scientific will be looking to expand its market presence in China and help offset falling revenues in other markets.
A Wall Street Journal report states the company is in the process of adding employees in China and will be debuting surgeon-training centers there in the near future in the hope of seeking more direct interaction with Chinese doctors.
Expanding into China will be challenging for the company as the nation has more than 1,000 distributors, which will present extensive logistical and managerial issues.
Warren Wang, vice-president and managing director of Boston Scientific's China division, told the Wall Street Journal that local governments in the country also want lower medical device prices.
There is also the question of competition. Boston will be entering a market of numerous Chinese device companies, as well as older rivals from back in the US – with Medtronic presently the leading multinational medical technology company in China.
