Boston Scientific to launch 2 new stents

18th March 2009

Boston Scientific is on track to launch two new stents in Europe this year, it has been reported.

Reuters explained the drug covered medical devices will be available across the continent by the end of 2009 – and one could be available in non-European countries as soon as April.

Taxus Element, which is part of the firm’s own portfolio, should be launched in October, according to the company.

A version of Abbott’s new Xience stent, called Promus Element, should be available in November.

In 2006, Boston Scientific bought Guidant. The former then sold the latter’s stent business to Abbott but retained the right to sell Xience under the new name. Abbott will receive 40 per cent of the profits.

The chief executive officer of Boston Scientific Jim Tobin told the news agency it is likely a next-generation product will be submitted for European regulatory review in the next few months.

In theory, the stent, which uses technology acquired from Irish company Labcoat, could be on the market by the end of the year, he concluded.

The firm employs more than 25,000 people.
