Bristol-Myers Squibb and Grail announce new cancer research alliance

Bristol-Myers Squibb has announced an equity investment and plans for a cancer-focused research collaboration with the life science company Grail.

The alliance will utilise Grail's future analytics tools to inform research into cancer treatment, advance the development of new diagnostic methods and ultimately improve patient outcomes.

Grail's goal is to develop highly sensitive blood tests to detect cancer in its early stages to enable earlier intervention with targeted therapies. It hopes to accomplish this by combining high-intensity cancer DNA sequencing, the latest computer science and large clinical studies into a diagnostic platform.

As an investor in the company, Bristol-Myers Squibb will gain early access to Grail's comprehensive clinical trial databases to improve its understanding of tumour genomics.

It also hopes to examine clinical data using Grail's analytic tools to inform future research decisions, guide its strategies in the field of point-of-care companion diagnostics, and improve the selection and management of patients through more targeted treatments.

Francis Cuss, chief scientific officer at Bristol-Myers Squibb, said: "Grail's future innovation potential is significant. Liquid biopsies hold the potential to support much earlier intervention and better define individual patient characteristics that may enhance treatment decisions."
