Bristol-Myers Squibb report calls for new approach to long-term cancer care

7th February 2017

Bristol-Myers Squibb has published a new report calling for healthcare systems to revamp their approach to long-term cancer care.

Developed by the Economist Intelligence Unit, the Global Cancer Survivorship: The Need for Integrated Care report highlights the importance of providing cancer services that are physically and financially accessible to cancer survivors who are living increasingly long lives.

Multi-stakeholder-driven changes are required to provide the level of integrated or coordinated care that addresses the range of long-term healthcare needs these patients require, with potential measures including new evidence-based research and enhanced workplace support for those affected by cancer.

It was also recommended that new, more efficient support networks based on best practice research be introduced to deliver improved patient outcomes.

Emmanuel Blin, chief strategy officer of Bristol-Myers Squibb, said: "The multi-pronged research explores several concepts, including the value of cancer survivorship, and introduces powerful ideas to support the cancer community in the long term."

2012 estimates indicate that around 32.6 million people were five-year cancer survivors, though rates of long-term survival tend to vary depending on cancer type and region.
