Britons ‘putting oral health at risk by indulging their sweet tooths’
A survey highlighting the UK cities with the biggest sweet tooths has underlined how willing many Britons are to risk their oral health by indulging in sugary snacks.
Conducted by the Oral Health Foundation, the report revealed that 61 percent of people in the UK consume portions of cake or biscuits every day. Belfast was singled out as the most susceptible city, with 83 percent of residents indulging their sweet tooth on a daily basis.
Norwich and Liverpool came next, with 74 percent of residents treating themselves daily; by contrast, Aberdeen was the least susceptible city of those surveyed, with only 46 percent consuming a sweet treat on a daily basis.
These trends are telling, given that Belfast and Liverpool have some of the highest levels of tooth decay in Britain. The NHS advises that added sugars should not make up more than five percent of daily calorie intake, but many portions of cake exceed half of this.
Dr Nigel Carter, chief executive officer of the Oral Health Foundation, said: "Every time we eat something sugary our teeth come under acid attack, snacking often throughout the day means multiple attacks and our teeth can take a real battering, often leading to tooth decay."
