Britons ‘use toothbrushes for six months before changing them’
British people may be using their toothbrushes for twice as long as recommended before buying a new one, a survey has revealed.
Carried out by tooth whitening specialists White Glo, the consumer survey indicates that British toothbrushes are six months old on average before they are replaced, reports Dentistry.co.uk.
This is despite the fact that government recommendations state that toothbrushes should be replaced every three months for maximum effectiveness, meaning many are still using brushes that are no longer effectively maintaining optimal oral health.
The survey also revealed that 90 percent of respondents said they place a high value on a good toothbrush, yet 79 percent admitted to not knowing what to look for when buying a new brush.
Dr Georgios Sotiropoulos, a dental expert from White Glo, said: "Research shows that even the best toothpastes can't protect and clean properly when used with a worn and old toothbrush. This in turn can lead to increased staining and a higher risk of bad breath, gum disease and tooth decay."
