Brown boosts funding for medical research
The treasury has announced that it is to reform the way medical research is carried out with the NHS in Britain, and has achieved a promise of an extra ?1 billion in funding.
As a result of the reforms promised, the UK Clinical Research Collaboration (UKRC) group said collectively it aimed to increase its investment in research that involves the NHS by ?1 billion.
The department promised to commit recommendations made in the Best Research for Best Health report, including the establishment of a single National Institute for Health Research.
In addition, the treasury said that it would take measures to improve the regime by which patients are recruited for clinical trials, whilst also implementing reforms to streamline the entry of regulatory data and standardise the approvals and permissions regime.
“British biomedical companies already lead the world in applying research – contributing ?3.7 billion to our exports,” said Gordon Brown, chancellor of the exchequer.
“Our National Health Service has, over the last fifty years, pioneered some of the great medical breakthroughs.”
Sir David Cooksey, chairman of the industry reference group of the UKRC added: “Members of the UKCRC Industry Reference Group believe that this action by the Government is vital to reverse the decline in clinical research and clinical trials activity that has occurred in the UK over the last few years.”
