BVA criticises ‘irresponsible’ Morrisons Christmas advert

13th December 2012

The British Veterinary Association (BVA) has strongly criticised Morrisons for depicting a child feeding Christmas pudding to a dog in its new TV advert.

Peter Jones, president of the association, pointed out that Christmas pudding and other festive desserts such as mince pies are potentially harmful to animals because they contain raisins and sultanas.

Animal health professionals will be aware that consuming such foods could lead to kidney failure in some pets.

Mr Jones said the BVA is "disappointed" in the advert and has written to the supermarket chain with a request that it be withdrawn.

"Veterinary organisations and animal welfare charities work really hard to promote messages about responsible pet ownership and TV adverts such as this one, with huge audiences, can undermine this work," he commented.

He also urged pet owners not to be tempted into giving their animals special treats at Christmas that could be harmful.

An unrelated Facebook campaign, which contains details of dogs that have died after consuming raisins, has also been launched in protest against the advert.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-801506095-ADNFCR
