BVA supports MP call for dog control notices
The British Veterinary Association (BVA) has backed a recent report from the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Select Committee calling for the introduction of dog control notices (DCNs) across the UK.
Coming in response to the government's draft amendments to the Dangerous Dogs Act, the cross-party committee of MPs highlighted the importance of consolidated legislation on dog control, including strong preventive measures.
BVA president Peter Jones praised this stance, saying: "DCNs have already been introduced in Scotland and have the support of veterinary surgeons, dog welfare organisations and enforcers, as well as many parliamentarians."
Both the BVA and the British Small Animal Veterinary Association also welcomed the committee's stance on not extending the list of banned breed types, as this emphasises the fact that any dog can become aggressive if their owner is irresponsible.
It is hoped that these recommendations will be taken on board by the government and worked into its legislative approach.
This comes after the BVA expressed disappointment earlier this month that the Welsh government has suspended planned legal changes to control dangerous dogs.
