BVA welcomes move towards mandatory CCTV for slaughterhouses

17th November 2017

The British Veterinary Association (BVA) has welcomed the introduction of new legal measures ensuring that all slaughterhouses will require CCTV monitoring.

It has been confirmed that the Department for Environment, Farming and Rural Affairs will be mandating that CCTV be installed in every slaughterhouse in England from next year, covering all areas where live animals are present.

Veterinarians who oversee animal health, welfare and public health in slaughterhouses will be given unrestricted access to the last 90 days of footage captured through these cameras, making it easier for them to monitor welfare standards more effectively.

This move has been received positively by the BVA, which has been been campaigning for this to happen for many years alongside the Veterinary Public Health Association.

Gudrun Ravetz, senior vice-president of the BVA, said: "We are delighted that these measures, helping to safeguard animal welfare, will come into force next year and that the government is fully committed to implementing them."

The legislation will be introduced in the new year and come into force in spring, with all slaughterhouses required to comply following an adjustment period of up to six months.
