Calcium consumption levels ‘vary significantly on global basis’

19th October 2017

Daily calcium intake among adults varies significantly in different parts of the world, according to new research.

The Brown University study examined existing research literature assessing national averages of daily calcium intake around the world, ultimately collating information pertaining to 74 countries.

It was found that southern and eastern Asia had the world's lowest average intakes – often less than 400 mg a day – while only northern European countries registered intakes of more than 1,000 mg a day.

Although national recommendations for the ideal level of calcium intake vary by region, most countries' average intake was lower than recommended, suggesting many people may be at an increased risk of fractures and osteoporosis.

Study leader Ethan Balk, an associate professor at the Center for Evidence Synthesis in Health at Brown University's school of public health, said: "This work draws attention to regions where calcium intake needs to be assessed and where measures to increase calcium intake are likely to have skeletal benefits."
