Caliper launches new product for cancer research

21st April 2008

Caliper has launched a range of ultra-bright light producing tumor cell lines.

The firm claims that its Bioware Ultra product can produce a cell line that is up to 100 times brighter than other methods, allowing researchers to detect a single cancer cell in an animal via non-invasive in vivo imaging.

Mark Roskey, vice president of reagents and applied biology at the organisation, said that researchers using optical imaging needed to tag nearly 500 cells before a sufficient signal could be monitored.

He added: "Bioware Ultra cell lines are the only line of cells available that offers the research community the level of sensitivity to detect a single cell further demonstrating Caliper’s commitment to increasing the capabilities of pre-clinical, non-invasive in vivo imaging."

"The ability to detect and monitor a single cancerous cell in an animal model dramatically improves the ability to understand disease evolution from early stages and reaction to treatment options," he concluded.

The company, which claims to produce cutting-edge technologies for researchers in life science, has launched seven Bioware Ultra products that cover a range of cancer models including breast, colorectal, lung and prostate.
