Calls for Budget to tackle alcohol misuse

23rd March 2011

The government has been urged to make the new Budget meaningful in relation to the issue of alcohol misuse.

National charity Alcohol Concern, along with six other influential health organisations, recently refused to back the government's Responsibility Deal on alcohol.

The campaigners say chancellor George Osborne should take the opportunity presented by the Budget announcement to introduce a minimum price per unit of alcohol.

They say the measure would reduce consumption and prevent some of the damage caused by alcohol misuse, including chronic health problems, crime and domestic violence.

Don Shenker, chief executive of Alcohol Concern, said: "Wednesday's Budget provides the perfect opportunity to significantly increase the price of super-cheap alcohol so that we can reduce consumption across society, particularly amongst the heaviest and youngest drinkers."

Last week, Cancer Research UK said it was signing up to the government's Responsibility Deal, but was concerned that the alcohol pledges "do not go far enough".ADNFCR-8000103-ID-800472888-ADNFCR
