Cancer more feared in UK than any other disease

17th August 2011

A new UK survey has shown that cancer is the most feared life-threatening disease among people in Britain.

Cancer Research UK has commissioned a YouGov survey which reveals that more than a third of respondents fear cancer the most, more than the number who selected Alzheimer's, stroke and heart disease.

Brain cancer was identified as the form of the disease that causes the greatest worry, due to the perception that it has the worst symptoms and is most likely to be fatal, with bowel and lung cancers coming next.

Dr Lesley Walker, director of cancer information at Cancer Research UK, noted that recent advances in medication mean that survival rates from cancer have doubled in the last 40 years.

He added: "We need to do all we can to maintain the level of cancer research in the UK so that we can continue making discoveries like these."

Last week, the organisation advised that letters of recommendation from GPs would help to increase the number of people participating in bowel cancer screenings.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-800702808-ADNFCR
