Cancer Research study finds four in ten cases caused by lifestyle issues

29th March 2018

Cancer Research has revealed more than a third of cases found in the UK each year are caused by lifestyle choices, indicating that many thousands of people could avoid the disease simply by making healthier decisions.

Its conclusion that 135,500 cases were lifestyle-related means 37.7 percent of cancers are easily preventable. The most common problem is smoking, which is responsible for 15.1 per cent of cases, particularly lung cancer. Obesity is second, with 6.3 percent having their cancers attributed directly to their weight issues.

The most positive news in the research was that the number of preventable cancers had fallen from 42.7 percent of the total in 2011, suggesting Britons are living increasingly healthy lifestyles.

Cancer Research UK’s chief executive Sir Harpal Kumar said: “Leading a healthy life doesn’t guarantee that a person won’t get cancer, but it can stack the odds in your favour.

"These figures show that we each can take positive steps to help reduce our individual risk of the disease."
