Cancer Research UK to invest £45 million in new trials
Cancer Research UK is to invest £45 million in what it has described as being among its "largest investments in clinical research to date".
The funding will support clinical trials aimed at testing an array of medical interventions, with work taking place through clinical trial units (CTUs) in Cardiff, Birmingham, Glasgow, Southampton, Leeds and London. Trials in the capital will take place at The Institute of Cancer Research, London, University College London and Queen Mary University of London.
Cancer Research UK’s children’s cancer expert Professor Pamela Kearns, who directs the CTU in Birmingham, said trials are vital in helping establish the effectiveness of adult treatments when applied to children.
She added: “One question this trial is trying to answer is if a drug called bevacizumab can help treat their neuroblastoma. Bevacizumab is a type of biological therapy called a monoclonal antibody that targets the tumour’s blood supply.
"Doctors already treat adult cancers with this drug and we want to see if it works for children with neuroblastoma."
